The ritual, the heat, and the method
Is it safe to use at home?
Units sit in insulated, self-extinguishing aluminum bases with double-sided adhesive backing that safely sticks to skin without sliding. Like any ritual involving fire, it demands your full presence. The self-adhesive base keeps the unit secured, and the course teaches you to read your body's heat signals for a safe, comfortable session.
Will it smoke out my apartment?
We must be honest: this is fire and earth, so there is always a natural herbal scent. But the bases are smoke-containing and the burn is brief (5–10 minutes), so it is manageable for most indoor spaces. Open a window for ventilation and be mindful of sensitive fire alarms.
Do I need to know acupuncture points?
No. TCM is complex, but the home ritual is simple. Instead of 300 acupoints, we teach eleven, the ones that handle most of what modern life throws at a body, one day at a time, each located by a landmark you already know. If you can find your navel and your kneecap, you can perform this ritual.
How long does a session take?
Five to ten minutes of presence. These units reach peak temperature and extinguish within minutes, designed for a modern schedule, unlike traditional long-burning sticks.
What do I do with the ash?
Don't throw it away. Moxa ash is pure plant material, rich in minerals. Students use it for indoor plants, as a natural paste, or to neutralise odours in small spaces.
Who should not use moxa?
Do not use this ritual if you are pregnant (especially on the lower body), have a high fever, or acute skin inflammation. Always consult a health professional for medical concerns, and always follow the directions for use.
I can buy moxa sticks cheaply at an Asian grocer. Why this?
You can, and if you already know what you are doing, sometimes you should. Two honest differences. First, origin: ours is grown and made in Qichun County, Hubei, by Hubei Dingai Technology. Qichun is Li Shizhen's birthplace and China's protected origin region for moxa leaf, and its mugwort measures higher in volatile oils and gives off more heat than leaf grown elsewhere. Second, format: these are not loose rolls you hold. Each is a single dose on a self-adhesive, self-extinguishing stand that keeps the ember a fixed distance from your skin, so you place it and sit still with your hands free.
